Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the first of the sacraments of initiation.
Information gatherings for parents at held in the first Thursday of each month. These gatherings are held at 10.00 am and is repeated at 7.00 pm. They are held in the smaller at the Cathedral.
In the Cathedral Parish the sacrament of baptism is celebrated after a process of inquiry, formation and discernment. Adults who seek baptism are invited to enter into the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA see Adult Initiation). The RCIA is the process of Christian Initiation for adults that culminates in the celebration of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and eucharist. The RCIA is the model for all Christian initiation into the Catholic Church.
Parents who present their children who are age 7 and over are invited to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC). This process seeks to engage the child and family in the process of preparation for baptism.
Infants are baptised into the Catholic Church at the request of their parents, "the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith." The Cathedral Parish welcomes the request of parents to have their children baptised. On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays of each month baptisms are celebrated. During 10.30am Sunday Mass, parents present their children for baptism, profess with the whole assembly the faith of the Church "the faith that these children will be baptised into" and sign their child with the sign of the cross, the ritual action which "claims them for Christ Jesus." Each family is assisted in the preparation and celebration of their child's baptism by a parish sponsor, offered by the parish to accompany families through the baptism process.
Following baptism, the Cathedral parish seeks to support families in the faith formation of their child. Godstart is the post baptism program through which we do this.
